Bank Failure Ratings Overview

The chart below contains the time series of total number of banks in each rating category. It contains only bank that are still operating in the latest quarter. All the failed or merged banks are excluded. Therefore, the total number of banks displayed in the chart are fewer than the actual numbers of banks for historical periods.

From the chart, it can be seen that the total number of banks rated 1 and 2 (the problem banks) peaked in later 2009 and banks rated 4 and 5 (the sound banks) troughed around the same time. Compared with the bank failure peak of 2010 from the Home page, this pattern provides a good validation of our ratings.
